“Finding Your Roots” to begin new series Jan. 7

In the new season of “Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.”, nineteen celebrity guests will sit down with Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. to dive into their ancestral history and solve mysteries that have plagued their families when the series returns January 7, 2025 on PBS.

In addition, Gates will have his own mystery solved when the tables are turned and the celebrated host becomes a guest in the last show of the new season.

Season 11 episode guest pairings will be:

  • January 14  – talk show host Joy Behar and actor Michael Imperioli
  • January 21 – novelist Amy Tan and poet Rita Dove

Free genealogy webinars to cover military records, DNA research

Several free genealogy webinars will take place this week covering family myths and military records.

Allen County Public Library will present “Finding and Using Alien Registrations for 20th century U.S Immigrants” on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 2:30 p.m. Alien registration forms constitute an important federal immigration record series rich in genealogical details. It was recently transferred from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to the National Archives Electronic Records Division. Learn about why non-naturalized residents filed these forms just after the 1940 Census and what information you might find in them about family members; we will then practice using a free database to identify and request these useful records.

American Ancestors will present “How to Avoid Common Family History Pitfalls and Myths” on Thursday, Dec. 19 at 3 p.m. When we first begin family history research or start work on a new line, we tend to be eager and excited. But that enthusiasm can cloud our thinking and fuel endless unproductive searching! Learn some tips for avoiding common “hazards” in your research process. Ideas discussed will include how to develop a research plan, staying organized, analyzing your research, and more.

Charlotte Mecklenberg Library will present “I’ve Done My DNA—Now What?” on Thursday, Dec. 19 at 6 p.m. This webinar will focus on Ancestry DNA. Learn how to access your matches, download your DNA data, and to maximize matches using Gedmatch.com. Participants will also learn about various DNA tests and which companies to start with.

Mid-Continent Public Library will present “Researching Your WWII Veteran” on Saturday, Dec 21 at 3 p.m. Eastern time. Piece together your WWII veteran’s military experience using web resources, library resources, and outside sources. Learn what records still exist and how to locate them.

Several free genealogy webinars to cover Irish research, genetic genealogy

Several free genealogy webinars will take place this week covering Irish research and genetic genealogy.

The Ohio Genealogy Society – Lorain County Chapter will present  “The Hidden Web: Digging Deeper” at 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 9.  Learn valuable insights on what to do when traditional search engines like Google and other standard sources fail to provide useful information for family history research. The presenter will explore resources that are hidden from Google’s reach, such as information buried deep within websites, proprietary databases, and specialized indexes that can unlock hidden genealogical treasures.

New York Public Library will present “Using Family Photographs for Genealogy Research” on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 1 p.m. Learn how genealogists can find photographs and other images of their ancestors in resources available at The New York Public Library, and elsewhere. The class will also show researchers how to examine those images for clues about family history.

Allen County Public Library will present “Breaking Down Irish Brick Walls” on Thursday, Dec. 12 at 6:30 p.m. Do all of your U.S. – based records for your Irish immigrant ancestors list only “Ireland” as the place of origin? Are you unable to trace your ancestry further back in Irish records without knowing the county or townland? This is a common frustration for many researchers with Irish heritage.
