In celebration of Halloween, MyHeritage.com  will offer free access to its death, burial, cemetery, and obituary records from Tuesday, October 29 until Friday, November 1, 2024.

The Naperville Public Library will present “Your Immigrant Ancestor’s Experience” on Monday, Oct. 28 at 8 p.m. Eastern time. In the mid 1850s to the late 1910s, our European immigrant ancestors flooded the shore of America. Learn about what the trip across the ocean was like and what they likely experienced once they stepped onto American soil. Pikes Peak Library District will present “Researching Your Female Ancestors” on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 9 p.m. Eastern time. Researching your female ancestors can be a difficult, yet rewarding, process. Women’s rights and positions in society varied by time and place, often making their records harder to trace (and how do we find those elusive maiden names?!). In this class, we will learn strategies and records to help you research the women of your family.

Allen County Public Library will present “U.S World War Draft Registrations” on Thursday, Oct. 24 at 6:30 p.m. Eastern time. Learn the history behind the World War I and II drafts and how they were conducted. Discover how to interpret the codes and numbers provided on early registration cards and what they mean to their likelihood of having served in the military or having created more records. Find out new access to registration cards you may not know about and why access to color images can be important.

Several free genealogy webinars to cover European archives, Mayflower research

Several free genealogy programs will be offered this week covering European archives and writing your family story.

The Chemung Library District (NY) will present “Records of New York City’s Emigrant Savings Bank” on Tuesday, Oct 15, 2024 at 6 p.m.  Learn about the motivation behind the formation of New York City’s Emigrant Savings Bank as well as the the depositors’ genealogical information that was recorded in the bank’s records. Sources will be provided for accessing these records online and offline. A handout will be provided, and a Q&A period will follow the presentation.

Registration is open for RootsTech 2025

Registration for RootsTech 2025 is now open. It will take place on March 6–8, 2025, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and online at RootsTech.org.

RootsTech is hosted annually by FamilySearch, an international genealogy organization and popular website sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

RootsTech 2025 will offer a mix of in-person and virtual classes, interactive activities, and entertainment designed to inspire and educate family history enthusiasts of all levels. Some highlights of the conference include:

Fold3.com offers free access to some pension files this weekend

The genealogy website, Fold3.com, will be offering FREE access to its pension files from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812 and American Civil War until Monday, Oct. 7 at 3:59 p.m. Eastern time.

These documents of  military service provide valuable information about the veteran’s family. You could find a spouse’s maiden name, children’s birthdates, marriage date and location, and more. After the free access period ends, you will only be able to view records using a paid Fold3 membership.
