Several free genealogy webinars will be offered this week covering topics such as: London research, Native American research and changing street addresses.

Legacy Family Tree Webinars will present “Uncovering the Lives of your London Ancestors” on Tuesday, Nov. 2 at 9 p.m. This presentation will take you through a variety of record collections including birth, death, marriage, poor law and school records. In celebration of Halloween, MyHeritage.com is offering free and unlimited access to all death, burial, cemetery and obituary records from today until November 2, 2021.

The free offer only applies to records added before October 2021. Use these records to help you solve some of your brick wall problems or add more details to your family tree.

‘Jewish Genealogy 101’ workshop to take place Nov. 7

The Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island will present the 31th annual “Jewish Genealogy 101” workshop from 12:30-5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 7 as a virtual program.

This workshop is a four hour plus course on sources and strategies for conducting Jewish genealogical research. Instructors will explain where and how to find Jewish records which exist in the U.S., Europe and Israel.

The registration fee includes:
*A full year membership to the Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island
*Paper copy of  Avotaynu’s book “Getting Started in Jewish Genealogy”
*Digital copy of the workshop manual, “Jewish Genealogy 101”

The $35 registration fee includes one-year of individual membership and $40 registration fee includes one-year of family membership.

The last day to register is Friday, Nov. 5.  Payment can be made online or by check.

Several free genealogy webinars cover death records, inferential research

Several free webinars will take place this week covering Irish research, death records and genealogy technology.

The Genealogical Society of Bergen County will present “Inferential Genealogy” on Monday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. Inferential Genealogy is how family historians can accurately deduce ancestors’ identities and many aspects of their lives by digging below surface information in genealogical records and combining information from several sources. Useful in many situations, inferential methodology is especially helpful where records do not state relationships. A case study will be used.

The White Plains Public Library will present “Genealogy Research in Cemeteries” on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. Cemeteries often get a bad rap, especially around Halloween. But for the genealogist, they represent a potential storehouse of useful information to assist in their research. Returning presenter Alan Steinfeld will go over the why and how to do cemetery research. The participant will learn what information can and cannot be found at the cemetery, how to learn where your relative is buried and how to make your cemetery visit a productive one.

The Florida State Genealogical Society will present “Migration Patterns of Germans Within America” on Thursday, Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. Learn about how historical events channeled Germans into certain areas and how chain migration drew allied families together. Many migrated from NY/MD/PA down the Shenandoah Valley into VA, NC and SC. Accessible rivers and railroads led to the establishment of the German Triangle between Cincinnati, Milwaukee and St. Louis. German-language advertisements channeled them to Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Wisconsin and points west.

The Georgia Genealogical Society will present “Tax Records Tell the Story: Cluster and Neighborhood Research” on Thursday, Oct. 14 at 8 p.m. Learn how tax records can help locate individuals, identify neighborhood groupings, and separate individuals from others of the same name. Tax lists were generally taken annually and can help establish ages, residences, relationships, and the year an individual died or left the area. A listing for your ancestor in a tax list can provide evidence of his or her residence and land ownership in the case of missing or destroyed records, and in time periods before the 1790 U.S. Census.
