Website updates its New York historical newspaper titles

Several newspapers have recently been updated on the New York State Historic Newspapers website.

Recent updates to newspapers in Suffolk County include: the Southampton Press; The Times of Northport and East Northport; Suffolk County News; the Long-Islander; the Northport Journal; The Observer and the Southampton Press.

Several free webinars to cover Civil War, Ukrainian research

Several free genealogy webinars will be offered this week covering Ukrainian research, Civil War research, and Scottish research.

The Genealogical Society of Bergen County will present “Global Reach Without Airfare or Postage” on Monday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. Learn how to utilize expanding international resources, available by subscription and free, to facilitate research into “old country.” Also covered will be what foreign documentation, directories and indices are available from home and at libraries and archives. Legacy Family Tree Webinars will present “Beginning Ukrainian Research” on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. Learn which records are available to assist you in determining your Eastern European ancestor’s home village and their emigration to the United States. The London and Middlesex Branch of Ontario Ancestors will present “Beginning Scottish Research” on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 10 a.m.  The presentation will focus on the basic records such as post-1855 birth, death and marriage records on ScotlandsPeople – what information is recorded and how to search these records. She will also look at some money-saving tips on ScotlandsPeople by understanding references.

Historic church cemetery tour set for Manhasset

Christ Church Manhasset will sponsor a Historic Cemetery Tour on Saturday, Oct. 2, 2021 from noon to 5 p.m.

Re-enactors in costume will speak at the graves of: Aristocrat, Grave Digger, Fire Survivor, Society Lady, WW I Doughboy, Surveyor of 1888 and more. One hour tours start every 20 minutes.

Tickets are $20 at the gate; seniors/first responders, $15 and children 5-12, $5.

Rain date will be October 9.

Legacy Family Tree Webinars will present “Federal Records Relating to Rivers and Canals” on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. Many federal records pertain to the development and use of waterways in the United States. This lecture shows examples and explains the relevance of some of the applicable records found at the National Archives in Washington, DC, in its online holdings, and at its regional facilities. Photos and documents will be examined from diverse NARA record groups such as Records of the Office of the Chief of Engineers (RG 77), Records of the Inland Waterways Corporation (RG 91), and Records of the Bureau of Land Management (RG 49). Other examples come from holdings of the Library of Congress Serial Set and map collections.

Free webinar to discuss New York historic online newspapers

The Connetquot Public Library will be presenting a free webinar on Monday, Sept. 20, from 7-8 p.m. entitled “Historic New York State Online Newspapers.”

Learn tips to searching online newspapers as well as where to locate historical newspapers online. Topics covered will include: major free newspapers sites, college and university newspapers online, popular subscription sites and aggregator websites that offer further information.

Tours to be offered at Old Burying Ground Cemetery in Huntington

The Huntington Historical Society will be offering tours of the Old Burying Ground Cemetery in September, October and November.

The Old Burying Ground was established soon after the Town’s founding in 1653. Tours will be given at 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 18 and at 3 p.m. on Saturdays, October 30 and November 13.

Advance reservations are required. Tickets will not be sold the day of the tour. Tickets are $10 for members, $15 for non-members and $5 for children. Face masks are required.

Index available for Town of Oyster Bay vital records

The German Genealogy Group, part of the Genealogy Federation of Long Island, has recently added a birth, marriage and death index for the Town of Oyster Bay on its website.

The birth and marriage index covers the years 1847-1849 and the death index covers the years 1847-1849 and 1881-1920. There are 285 birth records, 117 marriage records and 9,673 death records.

If you find a record of interest in the index, copies of the records can be ordered from the Town of Oyster Bay for $22 per record. Instructions on ordering copies of the records can by found by using the links below:

The Los Angeles Public Library will present “Hispanic Research Methodology with FamilySearch” on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 2 p.m. Eastern time.
