Free genealogy webinars to focus on Canadian research, lineage societies

Several free genealogy webinars will be offered this week covering the topics of: Polish research, Canadian research and lineage societies.

Legacy Family Tree Webinars will present “How to Connect with Your Pilgrim Ancestors to Join the Mayflower Society” on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 2  p.m. Proving your connection to a Mayflower passenger can be challenging. Tracing your ancestry back 400 years means researching 20 or more generations to provide the necessary documentation to verify the birth, marriage, and death of each generation. This webinar will provide steps to assist you in your quest to become a member of the Mayflower Society.

Ontario Ancestors will present “Researching Your Canadian Ancestors in the First World War,” on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. Records of the Canadian Expeditionary Forces (CEF); including personnel files, Commonwealth war graves, nominal rolls, Americans fighting for Canada, and records of the Royal Canadian Navy will be examined. Additionally, post-war records will be covered.

The Southern California Genealogical Society will present “Researching Your French Canadian Ancestors” on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 1 p.m. Eastern time. With the right tools, searching for your French Canadian ancestors in Quebec has never been easier. Free access to death records this weekend

Now through November 2, the genealogy website MyHeritage.com will be offering free access to its death-related historical record collections.

There are over 150 collections in this category containing over 500,000,000 records.  These include cemetery and burial records, death records and obituaries.

Normally these collections are free to search but require a paid subscription to view the images. You will need to create a free user name and  password to access the images.

Free German genealogy seminar scheduled for Oct. 24

The New York Genealogical and Biographic Society will present “Researching African Americans in the Mid-Hudson Valley” on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. Using the example of the presenter’s research of an extended African-American family who lived in the mid-Hudson Valley, learn various techniques and sources that can be used to research New Yorkers who weren’t the head of household, probably didn’t own land, and rarely had a gravestone. Using lesser known sources, the presenter accumulated details about the daily lives of several generations of local African Americans and ultimately traced this family to ancestors who came from Africa.

The Southern California Genealogical Society will present “Researching California Mission Indians Using a Case Study” on Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 9 p.m. Using genealogy methodology (with on-line and brick and mortar repositories) the mystery of a Mission Indian is solved through use of some unique sources. This webinar moves backwards from a death certificate to uncover someone who kept his tribal connections and name private. AmericanAncestors will present “Using Bank Records in Family History Research” on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 3 p.m. Historical bank records are an overlooked resource for family historians. When they survive, these records can provide information about an ancestor’s residence, occupation, family relationships, and even immigrant origins.
