Free webinars to cover DNA research, census records

Several free webinars will be given this week covering the topics of census records, Southern manuscripts, DNA research and the Mexican-American War.

The BYU Family History Library will be presenting “Beginner’s Series 1: Getting to Know FamilySearch.org,” on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 4 p.m. Eastern time.

Legacy Family Tree Webinars will present “Five Ways to Find Your Family in Southern Manuscript Collections,” on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 2 p.m. Early pioneers and settlers were a diverse group with family members across the country. Records about the families which moved and those individuals and neighbors back home are also often elusive, but may hold hidden treasure for the persistent researcher. Thousands of wonderful stories and records are preserved in the Southern states about these families, and may contain the answers for which we are searching.

Southern California Genealogical Society will present “Researching Your Mexican War Ancestors,” on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. The Mexican-American War of 1846 marked the first United States conflict mostly fought on foreign soil that served as a training ground for officers in the Civil War 15 years later. Types of document you can find include: military compiled military service records; Navy rendezous reports; Marine Corp and Regular Army enlistments; pension and bounty land records; cemetery records; and veteran and lineage societies.

The Wellington County Branch of Ontario Ancestors will present “DNA Testing, Law Enforcement and Your Privacy,” on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. The workshop will cover the basics of DNA testing and how it can enhance your genealogical searches. It will be an introduction to DNA testing, as well as a review of the basics of genetic genealogy for those of you looking for a bit of a refresher.

Free French genealogy conference to take place in September

The Fédération Française de Généalogie will host a free weeklong conference to be held virtually from Sept. 26 through Oct. 3.

Visit stalls, chat with professional and amateur genealogists, watch videos, attend presentations and more. The entire conference will be interactive.

Free fall seminar focuses on German genealogy research

The San Diego Genealogical Society Fall Seminar will take place on Saturday, September 19 and will be free and open to the public.

The morning sessions will take place from noon to 3 p.m. Eastern time and the afternoon sessions will be from 4-6 p.m. Eastern time. The programs will include:

Combining Sources to Identify and Immigrant Origin and Arrival Record – In this lecture, a German immigrant’s family lore give four countries of origin but little information about their American arrival. Potential records for the family’s arrival and European origin differ from family stories. Can these conflicts be resolved?

Building a Credible Lineage, Despite Missing Information, Conflicting and Incorrect records and Finding Undocumented Publications  – This case study teaches how to establish credibility of undocumented genealogies, remedy record errors, resolve conflicting evidence and separate same-named men.

Overcoming Research Barriers: A  Case Study – This case study researches the origins and genealogy of a German-speaking immigrant who settled in St, Louis and Illinois and provides lessons on research planning, research barriers, source and biographical reconstruction of long forgotten lives and relationships

Finding “Unfindable” Ancestors – The failure of common research practices to identify ancestors does not mean they are unfindable.  Learn nine approaches that can help locate difficult-to-trace ancestors.

Allen County Public Library will present “Using Mortality Schedules in Your Research,” on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 2:30 p.m. We have all experienced trying to locate missing family members who may have died between census years. The federal mortality schedules for 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 reported deaths that occurred from June 1 the previous year up to May 31 of the census years. Learn how to you can locate the individual’s parents or spouses.

Legacy Family Tree Webinars will present “Finding Genealogical Data in the Chinese Exclusion Act Case Files,” on Wednesday, Sept 16 at 2 p.m. Chinese genealogical research is challenging. Even the names are confusing – a person could have two or three distinctly different names during his lifetime, and possibly an Americanized version. This webinar will give a brief history of the act, tell where the files are located, and how to access them.

Southern California Genealogical Society will present “Putting American to Work: Records of the WPA and CCC” on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 9 p.m. The Works Progress Administration (WPA) was founded as part of President Roosevelt’s New Deal. Providing jobs for over 8.5 million people, they were instrumental in compiling many records that are valuable to genealogists today. Many of the indexes and records we use today were compiled by the WPA.
