Two local genealogy groups to host meetings this weekend

Two local genealogy groups will be meeting this week.

The German Genealogy Group will meet this Thursday, Feb. 6, at the V.F.W. in Hicksville. Door open at 6:30 p.m., orientation begins at 7 p.m. and the meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m.

This month’s program will be “Using DNA to Solve Family Mysteries” and the presenter will be Susan Jaycox Murphy. Whether you are an adoptee or your DNA matches are full of people you can’t identify, there are strategies for solving the question of who they are and where they belong in your family tree. DNA testing companies are continually introducing tools and reformatting your test results to respond to how genealogists are using the results of their DNA tests. Learn abou these tools and other independent DNA research sites that can be utilized to solve the question of how a unknown family member matches you.

The Italian Genealogical Group will meet this Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Bethpage Public Library from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

This month’s program will be “Novel New York City Records” presented by Alec Ferratti. Learn about records that are typically overlooked, either because they are not well-known, or because they are not thought to be genealogically relevant.  Examples include licensing records, court records, voter registrations, education records, and the 1917 Military Census.  Some of these records are available at the Municipal Archives or the City Clerk, while others reside with the agencies that created them, and are only accessible by making Freedom of Information Requests.  Ways to legally work around privacy restrictions will be discusse
