Two local genealogy groups to meet this weekend

Two local genealogy groups will be meeting this weekend.

The DNA Genealogy Group of Long Island will meet at the Sachem Public Library on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 10:30 a.m.

This month’s program will be “DNA Cluster Headaches” presented by Merrill Loechner.  Have you tried any of the several auto-clustering programs out there? This program will go over some of the options for auto-clustering, including programs by Jonathan Brecher (Shared Clustering) and Evert-Jan Blom (Genetic Affairs, also licensed by My Heritage and GEDMatch). Learn how they work, the information you can get from the results, and what else you can do with the data. We’ll also talk about manual clustering and why this is sometimes the better option. Finally, learn about other tools that can give you various ways to look at your DNA matches.

The Huntington Historical Society will meet at the South Huntington Public Library on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 11 a.m.

New titles added to NYS historic newspapers website

The free website New York State Historic Newspapers has recently added new records to its database. This is created and administered by the Northern New York Library Network in partnership with the Empire State Library Network.

New titles added include:

Glens Fall Times and Messenger

The Herald (Hudson Falls)

The Johnstown Daily Republican

Northern Journal (Lowville)

Washington County Advertiser

Washington County Chronicle

Whitehall Chronicle

Whitehall Times

Two updated titles are: The Glens Falls Times and The Granville Sentinel.

NYS Genealogical Research Death Index recently updated

The New York State Genealogical Research Death Index had been updated and now includes deaths up to  Dec. 31, 1969.

The index starts at 1957. However, the index does not includes deaths for the five boroughs of New York City.

The index provides the date of death, gender, age at death, New York State file number and residence code.

In order to interpret the residence code number, you must go to the far right of the page and click on the red tab that says About. Scroll down to attachments and open either the third attachment for Out of State codes or the fourth attachment for New York State Gazetteer.

Two local genealogy groups will be meeting this weekend.

The Brentwood Genealogist will meet this Saturday, Jan. 25 at 10 a.m. at the Brentwood Public Library. This month’s topic will be “Italian Genealogy” and the speaker will be Alec Ferretti.

The Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island will meet this Sunday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m. at the Y-JCC in Plainview.

This month’s topic will be “The Key to Our Future Is to Remember… Our Past: The Veterans’ Testimonial Project” and the speaker will be Edna W. Susman. A longtime reference librarian at the Half Hollow Hills Community Library in Dix Hills, Edna Susman created the library’s Veterans Testimonial Project in 2014, to preserve the memories and experiences of veterans. Since the inception of the project, over 115 veterans from every military branch and conflict since World War II have been interviewed and their stories recorded.

Two free webinars to focus on deeds, technology tools

Two free genealogy webinars will be offered this week.

The Wisconsin State Genealogical Society will present “Deed You Hear About These Underutilized Records?” on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 8 p.m. Deeds are just one of many underutilized record sets genealogists need to use. Warranty and quit-claim deeds hold vital information that will lead you to great discoveries in your family tree. Also discussed will be estate packets, guardianship records, civil case files, and more.

Two local genealogy programs scheduled for this week

The Patchogue-Medford Public Library will offer a Genealogy Research Discussion Group on Wednesday, Jan. 15 from 10-11:30 a.m.  Get tips and tricks and help with researching your ancestors. Come discuss strategies and learn how others have succeeded.

The Irish Family History Forum will meet this Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Bethpage Public Library.

At 10 a.m. Tips and Tricks with Kathleen McGee will feature a discussion on the Irish Civil Registration of Marriages.  At 10:45 a.m. there will be Ask the Experts where participants can meet one-on-ine with an experienced genealogist to ask a basic genealogy question.

The program this month will be “Cemetery Research: Eternity is Not Forever” presented by Susan Jaycox Murphy. Cemetery research can be rewarding for family historians, providing them with information that they cannot find anywhere else.  Discoveries can include missing children, unknown relatives, dates and places of births, marriages, and deaths, relationships, group associations, friends, and even photographs.  Learn about the law, the practices of cemeteries, what can be found in cemetery research, where we can find records, and what we can do to preserve our family memorials.

Two local genealogy groups to meet this weekend

Two local genealogy groups will be meeting this weekend.

The Italian Genealogical Group will meet on Saturday, Jan. 11 at the Bethpage Public Library. This month’s program will be “Naturalizaton Research at the New York Public Library” presented by Philip Sutton. Learn the history of how our ancestors became citizens, the kinds of records they generated and when they did so, what information those records contain and where you can find them.

The Connetquot Public Library will present “Reclaim the Records” on Saturday. Jan. 11 at 2 p.m.. The presenter will be Alex Ferretti. Reclaim the Records is a nonprofit that seeks to restore public access to genealogical documents. Reclaim the Records has succeeded in obtaining and publishing, for free, decades of vital records indexes from New York City, New York State, and New Jersey and is currently working on projects across the country. He will explain the many ways to access these newly-available collections.
