Several cemetery tours scheduled in Suffolk County

Several cemetery tours scheduled in Suffolk County

Several cemetery tours, and a lecture on cemetery research, will take place in Suffolk County in the next two weeks.

On Saturday, Oct. 26, the 5th Annual Cemetery Tour will take place in Setauket at the historic Caroline Church from 10-11:30 a.m. The Three Village historian will lead a tour of the cemetery grounds and the church which was founded in 1725. It is sponsored by the Smithtown Historical Society.

The Brentwood Public Library will be presenting a lecture, “Exploring Cemeteries” on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 10-11:30 a.m. The talk will be presented by Susan Jaycox Murphy.

On Tuesday, Oct. 29, from 5:30-6:30 p.m., explore the South End Burial Ground in East Hampton with the village historian. The tour begins at the Sweet Home Museum. There is an 18-person limit.

On Saturday, Nov. 9, there will be a tour of the Huntington burying ground, established in 1653.  The tour will begin at 4 p.m. at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building and is sponsored by the Huntington Historical Society.

RootsTech London to offer free livestream of some lectures

Learn about Jewish research in Germany and Ukraine as well as updates regarding local resources, including the JGSLI library collection and a new JGSLI project.

Legacy Family Tree Webinars will present three webinars this week covering online privacy, tech tips and female ancestors belonging to fraternal organizations.

On Friday, Oct. 25, learn about “Finding Your Female Fraternal Ancestors”  at 2 p.m. Do you have ancestry with membership in the Eastern Star? The Daughters of Rebekah? or another woman’s fraternal organization. This lecture focuses on those female fraternal auxiliaries and the rich genealogical material of family members who may have belonged to one or more of these secret societies.

The National Archives will host its 7th annual Virtual Genealogy Fair on Wednesday, Oct. 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on YouTube.

German/Slavic seminar to focus on handwriting interpretation

The Family History Library in Salt Lake City will be offering a series of free online webinars on interpreting German/Slavic handwriting in the month of October.

Classes will take place Monday through Friday, Oct. 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25 for the following languages:

Dutch – each day at 10:45 a.m.

German – each day at noon

Latin – each day at 3 p.m.

Polish – each day at 4:15 p.m.

Russian – each day at 5:30 p.m.

All times are Eastern Daylight Time. Prior to the German handwriting classes, it is suggested to watch the “Old German Script” video at www.familysearch.org/ask/learningViewer/375

Two local libraries to host genealogy programs

Two local libraries will present genealogy programs this week.

The Patchogue-Medford Public Library will host a Brooklyn Genealogy Research Discussion Group from 10-11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

New episode of ‘Finding Your Roots’ airs Oct. 15

Season Six of “Finding Your Roots” will continue on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 8 p.m. on PBS stations.

This week’s episode will feature Melissa McCarthy and Eric Stonestreet.  In January 2020, eight more episodes will air.

Free webinars to cover German research, Italian research and church records

Several free genealogy webinars will be offered this week covering topics such as German research, Italian research, church records and geographical research.

The Wisconsin State Genealogical Society will present “Your Immigrants’ Germany: Microstates and Microbreweries” on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 8 p.m. There will be a concise history given of Germany followed by details on some types of records affected by disunity, major state by major state. The webinar will conclude with a number of case studies using some microstates as examples.

Legacy Family Tree Webinars will present “Italian Civil Registration: Going Beyond the Basics” on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 2 p.m. This webinar discusses some of the more advanced records within Italian civil registration: Allegati [birth, death, and marriage supplements/attachments], Cittadinanza [citizenship records] and Atti Diversi [Diverse Acts]. Learn how these records can help to fill in the details of an Italian families’ history as well as track them across Italy and around the world.

The Southern California Genealogical Society will present “Faith of Our Fathers: U.S. Church Records” on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 9 p.m. Before state and vital records were mandated, churches held valuable information that can be used as substitutes for vital records. Except for the very early days in the colonies, there has never been a “state religion”.  A number of different religions and their beginnings will be discussed.

The Florida State Genealogical Society will present “Researching the Locations Your Ancestors Lives” on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 8 p.m.  Learning about the places where our ancestors lived helps us put them in social and historical context, as well as locate relevant records. For each location our ancestors lived we need to learn about the history, geography, customs, laws, and records. This webinar will demonstrate the process and provide resources on where to locate this type of information.
