Crista Cowan to give three presentations on Long Island

Crista Cowan, known as The Barefoot Genealogist, will be giving three presentations on Long Island on Saturday, Oct. 5 and Sunday, Oct. 6.

Ms. Cowan is a corporate genealogist for Ancestry.com. On October 5, Ms. Cowan will be the speaker at the DNA Genealogy Group of Long Island monthly meeting. She will talk on two topics:

Getting Started with AncestryDNA – 10:30- noon

Getting the Most Out of Your AncestryDNA Results – 2:30 –  4 p.m.

Both lectures will take place at the Sachem Public Library. You must register to attend either or both programs.

Ms. Cowan will also be speaking the next day, October 6, at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library at 3 p.m.

She will be discussing “What’s New at Ancestry.com.” Her presentation is being sponsored the Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island. Registration is not required.

Parking will be limited that afternoon due to a craft fair at the library so arrive early to find a parking spot.

 

 

Several local genealogy societies to meet this week

There will be five local genealogy society meetings this week.

The German Genealogy Group will meet on Thursday, Oct. 3 at the Hicksville V.F.W. This month’s topic will be “Introduction to German Parish Records” and the speaker will be Gail Blankenau. This will be a live webinar.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m., orientation begins at 7 p.m. and the program will start at 7:30 p.m.  For more information, go to: www.germangenealoygroup.com

The Huntington Historical Society will meet on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 11 a.m. at the South Huntington Public Library.

This month’s topic will be “Genealogy Resources of the Huntington Historical Society.” The speaker will be Karen Martin.  For more information, call 631-427-7045.

The Irish Family History Forum will  meet on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Bethpage Public Library.

This month’s program will be “Reclaim the Records,” presented by Alec Ferretti. There will be a “Tips and Tricks” session at 10 a.m., followed by “Ask the Experts” at 10:45 a.m. The presentation will begin at 11:15 a.m.

Two new NY databases added to German Genealogy Group website

The German Genealogy Group has recently added two new databases to its website.

The Internal Revenue Service Taxpayers, New York, 1919-1920 database contains records of taxpayers of the Brooklyn office of the Internal Revenue Service. The records list for each taxpayer name, address, refund amount and date. There are 298 records

Scans can be requested for a fee or records can be viewed onsite at the National Archives.  To make an appointment to view the records or to obtain a scan of the records, contact the National Archives at 212-401-1620 or email newyork.archives@nara.gov

To search the datatbase, click on Database Searches, then select Federal.

Also added to the website is Naturalizations, NY Eastern District, 1956-1975. There are over 250,000 records in the database.

Two local libraries to offer genealogy programs this week

Two local libraries will be hosting  genealogy programs this week.

The Patchogue-Medford Public Library will be presenting “Exploring Family History with Your Relatives” on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 6:30 p.m. The presenter will be April Earle.

Three local genealogy groups to meet this week

Three local genealogy groups will meet this week.

The Brentwood Genealogists will meet at the Brentwood Public Library on Tuesday, Sept. 17, from 7-8 p.m.

This month’s topic will be “What to Do After the DNA Test,” a live webinar presented by Blaine T. Bettinger. For more information, call 631-273-7883 ext. 131.

The Irish Family History Forum will meet on Saturday, Sept. 21 at the Bethpage Public Library.

This month’s program will be “Finding Irish Place of Origin in U.S. Records” presented by Kathleen McGee. Everyone on this side of the Atlantic who researches an Irish ancestor hopes to discover the place in Ireland where he or she was born. It’s a search that starts, not with Irish sources, but with U.S. records. This presentation will focus on American sources that show birthplace, such as draft registration records; birth, marriage, and death records; gravestones; probate records; death notices; some census records; and more.

The Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island will meet on Sunday, Sept. 22, at the Y-JCC in Plainview.

This month’s program will be “Two Horses in Lubin.” The presenter, Dan Oren, will describe how he used unanticipated local records to investigate genealogy and family history which revealed unthinkable discoveries. Dan is Associate Professor of Psychiatry (Adjunct) at Yale University and president and founder of The Friends of Jewish Heritage in Poland.

Several free genealogy webinars to be offered this week

Several free genealogy webinars will be offered this week covering the topics of railroads, Latin American research, courthouse research and census records.

Wisconsin State Genealogical Society will present “Following the Tracks: Your Ancestors on the Railroad” on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 8 p.m. Railroads for nearly two centuries have been the preferred mode of transportation for many of our ancestors. Their rich history includes details on when lines started, ceased, merged, or filed bankruptcy. Records including employee, manuscripts, directories, pensions, social security, and other organizations including the Pullman Porters and Harvey Girls are examined.

Florida State Genealogical Society will present “Making Those Early Census Records Talk” on Thursday, Sept. 19 at 8 p.m. Federal census records are one set of the most widely used genealogical resources. Census records before 1850 are often ignored. These records are especially helpful to genealogists because of their availability, genealogical value and data consistency. The pre-1850 census records can answer a large number of questions and provide additional clues. Case studies will show how they may be used effectively.

Newspaper research to be topic of genealogy program

The Italian Genealogy Group will be meeting this Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Bethpage Public Library.

This month’s topic will be “Newspaper Research Using Old Fulton NY Post Cards’ and the presenter will be Laura H. Congleton.

Laura has a certificate in Genealogical Research from Boston University and is a graduate of the National Institute of Genealogical Research in Washington, D.C.

Assistance is available for beginning and advanced researchers in the auditorium lobby before the meeting.
