Several free webinars will be offered this week covering the topics of DNA research and the Civil War.

Legacy Family Tree Webinars will present “An Introduction to DNA Painter” on Wednesday, April 3 at 2 p.m. DNA Painter is a website that aims to help demystify your DNA matches. This webinar will introduce the site’s features and tools for chromosome mapping and relationship prediction. The concept of chromosome mapping will then be discussed, with detailed examples of how the site can be used to visualize your matches and help to identify how you are related to each match.

Minnesota Genealogical Society will present “Getting the Most Out of DNA Ethnicity Reports” on Wednesday, April 3 at 8 p.m. The most frequent complaint about DNA tests is that ethnicity reports don’t match people’s expectations. This webinar will look at how these reports are calculated and explore some of the challenges that stand in the way of presenting ethnicity accurately. In the end, you’ll better understand how you can incorporate ethnicity results into your research.

The Southern California Genealogical Society will present “U.S. Colored Troops and their Civil War Service” on Saturday, April 6 at 1 p.m. This webinar will explore the enlistment of the U.S. Colored Troops with the Union Army and their roles in serving during the Civil War. There will be a discussion about the various databases available for searching for the records of possible ancestors who served. Burial, memorial and museum locations will also be discussed.
