Two local genealogy groups to meet this weekend

Two local genealogy groups will meet this weekend.

The Huntington Historical Society will meet on Saturday, March 2, at 11 a.m. at the South Huntington Public Library.

This month’s topic will be “Cemetery Sources for Genealogy Research” and will be presented by Robert Farrell.  For more information, call 631-427-7045.

The DNA Genealogy Group of Long Island will meet on Saturday, March 2, at 10 a.m. at the Sachem Public Library.

This month’s topic will be “The Missing Boyles of Drumcrew” and will be presented by Michael Carragher.  What do you do when a great-grandfather disappears and all his siblings abandon their farm and emigrate for destinations unknown, and the paper trail turns up no firm answers?  Michael Carragher will explain how DNA matches and genetic genealogy can provide the clues to solve this riddle.

Free genealogy webinars to discuss spreadsheets, immigration services

Two free genealogy webinars will take place this week.

Legacy Family Tree Webinars will present “Spreadsheets 401” on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m. Learn how spreadsheets can help as you learn to read foreign language newspapers.

Use spreadsheets as a translation tool for your ancestors’ vital and religious records. Create a spreadsheet to track your ancestors and those great ethnic or locality websites – when you find a new ancestor or a new website you’ll be ready to dive in.

The USCIS History Office will present “Staffing the Golden Shores: The Early Years of Immigration Service” on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 1 p.m.

This webinar uses primary sources from the National Archives in Washington, D.C. to discuss and analyze the early years of immigration service from 1891-1917. This webinar will not be recorded.

‘Finding Your Roots’ continues this Tuesday

“Finding Your Roots,” hosted by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., continues on Public Broadcasting System (PBS) on Tuesday, February 26 at 8 p.m.

Feb. 26 – Hard Times – Filmmaker Michael Moore and actors Laura Linney and Chloë Sevigny find distant ancestors overcame great hardships in ways that resonate with their lives today.

April 2- The Eye of the Beholder – Director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, performance artist Marina Abramović and painter Kehinde Wiley find their identities challenged—and affirmed.

April 9 – All in the Family – This show features actor Ty Burrell, and radio host Joe Madison. Also a look at how a summer camp for children is using genetic genealogy to help young people better understand their identities.

Three local genealogy groups will be meeting this weekend.

The Patchogue-Medford Public Library Genealogy Research Group will meet this Saturday, Feb. 23, at 10 a.m.

This month’s topic will be “Researching African-American Heritage” and the speaker will be Diane Warmsley. For more information, call the library at 631-654-4700.

The Brentwood Genealogists will also meet on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Brentwood Public Library.

This month’s topic will be “Roots and the Genealogical Proof Standard” and the speaker will be librarian Peter Ward. For more information, call the library at 631-273-7883 ext. 131.

The Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island will meet this Sunday, Feb. 24, at 2 p.m. at the Mid Island Y-JCC in Plainview.

This month’s topic will be “A Look at New York Lost Synagogues” and the speaker will be Ellen Levitt.  Ellen will take us on a visual tour of synagogues on the Lower East Side, in the Bronx, in Brooklyn’s Brownsville, East New York, and Bedford-Stuyvesant, and in other areas of New York City which once had large and thriving Jewish communities. She will discuss the shuls’ architectural features, the demographics of the communities they served, and how the buildings are used today.

Several free genealogy webinars set for this week

Several free genealogy webinars will be offered this week covering the topics of surname studies, French genealogy, FamilySearch.org and timelines.

Wisconsin State Genealogy Society will present “Introduction to a Surname Study” on Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 8 p.m. This webinar will explore what a Surname study is and then look at the approaches to begin and construct a study. Ideas discussed will include identifying the likely size of such a study, geographical distribution of the surname and where to look to understand the history of surnames. Also discussed will be where to keep data, how to gather it and feature some of the “quick wins”.

Legacy Family Tree Webinars will present “Online Resources for French Genealogy: Part I” on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 2 p.m. French genealogy research benefits from some of the most detailed, and well-preserved records in the world. Free access to Ancestry UK through Monday

Ancestry UK is offering free access to over 1 billion Irish and UK records today through Monday, Feb. 18 at 6:59 p.m. Eastern Time.

The free access includes census records, voter registers, birth/marriage/death records, military records, etc.

If you live outside the UK, you will be prompted to visit your country’s Ancestry website. Bypass this instruction and proceed to the Ancestry UK website.

If you want to view any of the free records, you will need to create an account for Ancestry UK. There is no need to sign up for a free trial  When you view a record once you are signed in, you can save the image to your computer.

Irish Family History Forum to meet on Saturday

The Irish Family History Forum will meet this Saturday, February 16, at the Bethpage Public Library.

This month the topic will be “Show and Tell.” Members will share interesting research experiences, suggestions, photos, heirlooms, etc.

The program will begin at 10 a.m. and there will be a short break from 11 – 11:30 a.m. for refreshments and Ask the Expert. The program will continue at 11:30 a.m.
