Several free genealogy webinars offered this week

Several free genealogy webinars will take place this week on such topics as Illinois law, genetic genealogy, newspaper research and work house records.

The Illinois State Genealogical Society will present “Revelers, Hogkillers and Disobedient Children: Early Illinois Laws” on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 9 p.m. The laws our ancestors lived by tell their own story of life in earlier times, and, from the very first territorial statutes, enacted in 1809, the choices made by legislators about what laws were needed give context to family history. Using early Illinois laws as genealogical resources, we are able to tell the stories of a time when the big concerns were Blue Laws, wild animals, and children needing humbling.

Legacy Family Tree Webinars will present “Reconstructing Your Genetic Family Tree” on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 8 p.m. A genetic family tree is the list of genealogical ancestors from whom you inherited DNA. One of the goals of genetic genealogy is to recreate this genetic family tree through a process called “chromosome mapping.” Chromosome mapping uses cousin matches to identify which segments of DNA came from which ancestors. This webinar will look at the fundamentals of chromosome mapping and some tools you can use to begin to map your DNA.
