Small genealogy research groups to begin in January

*UPDATE*

The Patchogue-Medford Public Library will be hosting a series of area specific research group meetings in January, February and March.

The French-Canadian Genealogy Research Group will meet on Wednesdays, January 9, February 13 and March 13 from 10 a.m. to noon.

The Brooklyn Genealogy Research Group will meet on Wednesdays, January 16, February 20 and March 20 from 10 a.m. to noon.

The New Jersey Genealogy Research Group will meet on Wednesdays, January 23, February 27 and March 27 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Registration is a must.  Each group is limited to 10 people. If the group you are interested in is full, please ask to be put on the waiting list.  You can register online at the library website, www.pmlib.org, or call 631-654-4700.

Three local genealogy groups to meet this week

Three local genealogy groups will be meeting this week.

The Patchogue-Medford Public Library will be presenting its monthly “Climb Your Family Tree” program on Wednesday, January 2 at 10 a.m. For information, call 631-654-4700.

The German Genealogy Group will be presenting “Show and Tell” by various members on Thursday, January 3 at the Hicksville V.F.W.

The DNA Genealogy Group of Long Island will meet on Saturday, January 5 at 10 a.m. at the Sachem Public Library. This month’s program will be “Pay It Forward: Members Helping Members with the Basics.” Bring your laptop and your questions.

Several local genealogy groups to meet in December

Several local genealogy societies will be meeting in December.

The Patchogue-Medford Library will be presenting “Preserving Your Past: Home Archiving” on Saturday, December 1 at 10 a.m. Feel free to bring an item – such as a diary, letter or photo – for the presenter to examine and learn how to preserve it.

The Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island will present “Jewish Given Names” on Sunday, Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. at the Y-JCC in Plainview. The speaker will be Debra Braverman. Jews have distinct given names and naming traditions. This presentation will explain sources of different names and naming patterns based on geographic origin and language.

The Patchogue-Medford Library will be presenting “Last Minute Gift Ideas for the Genealogy Enthusiast” on Monday, December 17 at 7 p.m. For more information, call the library at 631-654-4700.

The Brentwood Public Library will present “Digital Maps and Family History” on Saturday, December 22 at 10 a.m. Learn to create a map of the important locations on your family tree using Google maps.

Lineage societies to be topic of local library meeting

The Patchogue-Medford Public Library will be hosting a genealogy lecture on Wednesday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m.

The topic will be “Joining Lineage Societies.” There are dozens of lineage societies in America such as the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Society of Mayflower Descendants. Come learn about the variety of societies that you can join based on your ancestry. The program is free and open to the public.

As a reminder, one-on-one genealogy appointments are available from 5-9 p.m. every Wednesday evening.

Beginner genealogy classes to be offered in Patchogue

The Patchogue-Medford Public Library will be offering a series of beginner genealogy classes on four consecutive Wednesday afternoons: July 26, Aug. 2, Aug. 9 and Aug. 16 from 1:30-3:30 p.m.

Topics will be:
July 26 – What You Need to Know to Get Started
Aug. 2 – Where is My Ancestor Buried
Aug. 9 – What Ship Did My Ancestor Arrive On
Aug. 16 – Naturalization Records

Family History Day set for May 6

Family History Day 2017 will take place on Saturday, May 6, from 1-5 p.m. at the Patchogue-Medford Library.

Family History Recording Studio (15 minute appointments)
Take this opportunity to record, and take home with you, a brief story from your past.
The Document Doctor (15 minute appointments)
Find out how to preserve a specific family document or photo. Bring your item to be examined.
Learn easy ways to digitize and store the all those photos you have in albums and shoe boxes.
Family History Crafts
Take time out for some make and take projects – create an informal family tree, design and color your own family coat-of arms, and do a brass rubbing (For adults and teens, grades 6 and up)
NYC Databases
Don Eckerle from the German Genealogy Group will discuss all the genealogy records from the NYC area that his group has indexed. These databases are available online for free and not just Germans ancestors.
Parent/Teen Genealogy Workshop
Genealogist Kathy will show you how to start your family history search. This program will be held at the Main Library building and is for parents and teens to attend together.

The Patchogue-Medford Genealogy Research Group will meet on Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Patchogue-Medford Public Library.

There will be a Help Session at 9:30 a.m. and the program will begin at 10 a.m.

This month’s speaker will be Katherine Cordes of the New York Public Library and she will discuss “Online Map Collections of the New York Public Library.”
