Virtual genealogy meeting to take place on April 1

In lieu of its regular in-person Genealogy Research Discussion Group meeting scheduled for Wednesday, April 1, the Patchogue-Medford Public Library will be hosting a virtual Genealogy Research Discussion Group from 10-11:30 a.m.

Get help researching your ancestors. Come discuss strategies and learn how others have succeeded. This meeting will be conducted using GoToMeeting.

Three local genealogy groups to meet this weekend

The Patchogue-Medford Genealogy Research Group will meet on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 10 a.m. This month’s program will be “Finding Your Family History Through DNA or How I Got a Sister Instead of a Bicycle for My 65th Birthday.” The speaker will be Chuck Weinstein.

The meeting will take place at the Patchogue-Medford Public Library. For more information, call 631-654-4700.

The Irish Family History Forum will also meet on Saturday. At 10 a.m. there will be a “Tips and Tricks” session followed by an “Ask the Experts” program at 10:45 a.m.

The featured program will be “Irish Genealogy 101” presented by Kathleen McGee. She will discuss how to avoid common mistakes and how to find your ancestor’s origin through U.S. records. In addition, she will discuss Irish resources such as census records, civil registration and parish records.

The Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island will met on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 2 p.m.

This month’s program will be “Henry Alsberg: Unsung Jewish Hero” prsented by Susan Rubenstein DeMasi.

Henry Alsberg, a foreign correspondent and aid worker, wrote about the terrors he witnessed and risked his life to assist his co-religionists. As a volunteer for the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, he helped set up orphanages, farming cooperatives, and schools, and he arranged for the safe emigration of thousands of Jews to the Americas. Later, he brought his adaptation of the Yiddish classic, The Dybbuk, to the English-speaking stage and directed the New Deal Federal Writers’ Project.

Three local genealogy societies will meet this weekend.

The Brentwood Genealogists will meet on Saturday, June 24, at 10 a.m. at the Brentwood Public Library. This month’s topic will be “What’s It All About: DNA Test” presented by Patricia Kellner. For more information, call 631-273-7883.

The Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island will meet this Sunday, June 25, at the Y-JCC in Plainview.
This month’s topic will be “The Rest of the Story: Finding Your Family in Online Newspapers” presented by
Janeen Bjork.

Janeen applies to genealogy the skills she developed in a 30-year career as a television researcher. Her own family tree is illustrated with newspaper stories that range from the mundane to the sensational. In this presentation, she will discuss some of the characters she has discovered and to the research methods that made it possible for her to find and preserve their legacies.

Genealogy Lock-In to take place April 1

The Patchogue-Medford Public Library will host its annual Genealogy Lock-In on Saturday, April 1 from 1-9 p.m.

This year’s presenter will be Colleen Fitzpatrick. Colleen is a forensic genealogist who consults for major military and civilian organizations. She is the author of three best selling books: “DNA and Genealogy,” “Forensic Genealogy” and “The Dead Horse Investigation: Forensic Photo Analysis for Everyone.”

Her afternoon lectures will be:
“Forensic Genealogy – CSI Meets Roots” – This lecture will spark your imagination to discover new ways of looking at your family mysteries.

“You Will Never Look at Your Old Photos the Same Way Again!” – Every bit of a photograph – the thickness, the edges, the shape and the image – can help you identify it. It’s not what you look at in a photo but how you look at it that counts.

After dinner lectures will be:
“The Database Detective” – Forensic Genealogy has used database mining to solve many mysteries. You may know where to look for information but in this lecture you will find out how to look at it.

“How DNA Can Help with Your Family History” – DNA analysis is only one corner of the research triangle. The others are family geography and family history. Learn you to get the most out of your DNA results.

On Sat. Feb. 25, The Patchogue-Medford Public Library Genealogy Research Group will present “How to Preserve Your Family Documents and Photos” by Melanie Cardone.

Also on Saturday, The Brentwood Genealogists will meet at the Brentwood Public Library at 10 a.m. This month’s program will be “Maximizing Your Research on FamilySearch.org” presented by Mary Ann Koferl. For more information, call 631-273-7883.

On Sunday, Feb. 16, The Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island will present “Research in Lithuania, Galicia and Ukraine” by Rhoda Miller, Renee Stern Steinig and Chuck Weinstein.

In addition to researching their own families in Lithuania, Galicia, and Ukraine, the speakers are active in Special Interest Groups (SIGs) and other projects for the regions. Rhoda is LitvakSIG’s Svencionys District Research Coordinator and manager of a Svencionys DNA group; Renee is a board member of Gesher Galicia, moderator of its JewishGen email discussion group, and its Family Finder editor; Chuck is a Ukraine SIG board member, its Towns and Districts Director, and a moderator of its discussion group.

Local genealogy groups to meet this Saturday

Two local genealogy groups will have meetings this Saturday, October 22.

The Brentwood Genealogists will meet from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Brentwood Public Library. The topic this month will be “Fire Insurance Maps – the Google Maps of Their Day.”

Fire insurance maps were developed in the late 19th century to assist insurance companies in managing their risk of coverage in areas where they did not have a physical presence. Over 54,000 maps were made of communities large and small and many communities had multiple maps created between 1895 and 1920. These maps today offer an incredible window into the past, illustrate the evolution of these
communities, and describe the physical environment of the lives of our ancestors

The Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island will meet this Sunday, June 26, at 2 p.m. at the Mid Island Y-JCC in Plainview. There will be a Help Session at 1:30 p.m.

This month’s topic will be “Roots Tour – Bialystok Travel Log” presented by Bill and Elaine Farran.
After years of research, Bill and Elaine knew much about their family’s history in Eastern Europe — addresses, occupations, even burial places. But they realized that to truly understand their ancestors’ lives they’d have go to their towns. The process went from an idea to a plan — where to go, how to get there, and how to navigate three Eastern European countries. In this entertaining talk, the Farrans will describe their planning process and their trip to ancestral lands.

Patchogue genealogy group to meet Saturday

The Patchogue-Medford Public Library Genealogy Research Group will meet this Saturday, Feb. 27,  at the library.

A Help Session will take place at 9:30 a.m. and a live webinar with genealogist Thomas McEntee will begin at 10 a.m. His topic will be “Managing the Genealogical Data Monster.”
