New genealogists, as well as advanced researchers, should visit the New York GenWeb site for free information on counties in New York State. New York GenWeb is part of a larger volunteer project called US GenWeb.

The site was started in 1996 and contains pages for each county in New York State. Each county page is run by volunteers. Go to the site’s main page and click on Choose a County. Once there you will find links to the different county pages. I have been impressed at the amount of information available for Nassau and Suffolk counties as well as the five boroughs of New York City.

Each county page contains unique information for the area and is certainly worth a look. It is especially helpful if you are doing research in a county that is not in your immediate area.
