African American genealogy workshop to take place February 29

To celebrate Black History Month, the Suffolk County Historical Society will be presenting an African American Genealogy Workshop on Saturday, Feb. 29 at 1 p.m. The presenter will be Sandi Brewster-Walker.

Come learn about African American family history research and the best genealogy resources to consult. The workshop will cover using information sources, interpreting research data, incorporating new data and organizing records.

The workshop is free for member and $5 for non-members. Registration is required.  To register, call 631-727-2881 ext. 100.

Free webinar to focus on using SnagIt for visual aids

Legacy Family Tree Webinars will present “Using SnagIt for Genealogy Visual Storytelling and Instruction” on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. Snagit is a tool for capturing screenshots and converting them into compelling visual aids to enhance family history narratives and genealogy instruction materials. It is useful for creating annotated images and privatizing sensitive visual information before sharing or publishing.

In this webinar learn to walk through navigating around the desktop application interface and using its various features, and learn how to backup your Snagit Library.

Several genealogy groups set to meet this week

There are several local genealogy groups meeting this weekend.

The Patchogue-Medford Public Library will have hosting a Genealogy Research Discussion Group on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 10 a.m.

The Connetquot Public Library will presenting a webinar with genealogist Thomas MacEntee entitled “Deciphering U.S. Census Codes,” on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. Learn the history of “coding the census” and how this information can improve genealogy research. Specifically, the webinar will cover the 1910 to 1950 US Census Population Schedules and the various codes employed.

The Brentwood Public Library will be presenting “The Architecture of Existence” on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 10 a.m. The speaker will be Kimberly Henderson. Explore the nuances of African American genealogy and learn how the presenter discovered her lineage using very little information to start. Learn tips on how to navigate your own lineage.

The Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island will present “The Mysterious Mr. Manley: How Do You Prove Something Didn’t Happen?” on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m.  Presenter Sue Fialkoff will describe her long search for a young relative’s possible second marriage a century ago. Did Eloise Metzger marry a Mr. Manley, as records suggested? IThe program will touch on helpful research strategies including refining your research question, analyzing negative evidence, using nontraditional sources, and placing your research into historical context.

To celebrate Valentine’s Day, MyHeritage.com is offering free access to over 440 million marriage records from today through Tuesday, Feb. 18,

There are 148 collections from all around the world including: the United States, England, Germany, Canada, Italy, Ireland, France, Portugal, Spain, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Australia and more.

Marriage certificates are a great resource for family information and typically contain not only the bride and groom’s names but parents names, ages, place of birth, and addresses.

To get started searching you will need to set up a free account at www.myheritage.com by clicking on Log In. After you have created an account, click on Research, then Birth, Marriage and Death.  On the right side of the page, click on Marriages and Divorces.

 

Irish Family History Forum to present ‘Show and Tell’ program

The Irish Family History Forum will meet this Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Bethpage Public Library.

This month’s program will be “Show and Tell.” At 10 a.m. for the “Show” part of the program, members will exhibit family heirlooms, artifacts, photos, letters, etc. at the display tables in the auditorium. After a break, the “Tell” part of the program will take place. Members will talk about a favorite ancestor, provide an interesting research story, etc.
