New York Slavery Index available free online

The John Jay College of Criminal Justice at the City University of new York has created the New York Slavery Index.

This free index provides records from 1525 through the Civil War. The data comes from census records, slave trade transactions, cemetery records, birth certifications, manumissions, ship inventories, newspaper accounts, private narratives, legal documents and many other sources. The index contains over 35,000 records and will continue to grow as the team of John Jay College professors and students locates and assembles data from additional sources.

The goal of the project is the bring together information that previously had been largely disconnected and difficult to access. Detailed searching instructions are available on the website.
