There are many free genealogy webinars to attend this week. Topics to be covered include: using German directories, probate records of slaveholders and cluster genealogy research.

The Wisconsin State Genealogy Society will present “How Advertising Brought Our Ancestors to the Midwest” on Tuesday. Aug. 15 at 8 p.m. Motivation is one of the hardest factors to identify when we’re trying to reconstruct our ancestors’ stories. Business owners, land speculators, and communities wishing to grow all turned to various forms of advertising to entice people to migrate to the Midwestern territories and states.

Legacy Family Tree Webinars will present “Analyzing Probate Records of Slaveholders to Identify Enslaved Ancestors” on Tuesday, Aug. 15 at 8 p.m. This webinar will provide an overview of the probate process, the genealogical information that can be found in a slaveholding estate, and related records that a probate proceeding may point to.

The Florida State Genealogical Society will present “Clusters and Chains for Genealogical Success” on Thursday, Aug. 17 at 8 p.m. Understanding the history of our ancestors homeland, and the push and pull forces of immigration forces, we can better understand the people who “came over on the boat.” Learn about the settlement of immigrants in the US, and the significance of “little” communities like “Little Italy,” “Little Canada” and “Little China.” The history of the communities our ancestors settled in can illuminate relationships among families and its importance to our family research.
