Two free webinars cover DNA tests and mental institution records

Two free genealogy webinars this week will focus on DNA results and researching family members who were confined to a mental institution.

The Minnesota Genealogical Society will present “Partly Sunny: Making Sense of DNA Matches” on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 8 p.m. Some genealogists scour DNA results for possible cousins; others use DNA to test hypotheses about relationships of living people. In either case, they depend on testing companies’ criteria for identifying matches and on their predictions of relationships. Learn why these estimates, or predictions, are sometimes overly optimistic and sometimes overly pessimistic.

Southern California Genealogical Society will present “Finding Dirk: Insanity in the 19th Century” on Sat. Feb. 4 at 1 p.m. Is your family secret a relative confined to a mental institution? Using a case study, this webinar will review the array of publicly available records and compare that with the records successfully retrieved through the courts. The roles of each of the players in the process are explained.
