Free webinars offered on photo identification, obituary research

Three free webinars will be offered today and tomorrow on a variety of topics.

The Georgia Genealogical Society will present “You Will Never Look at Your Old Photos the Same Way Again” tonight at 8 p.m. Step into the 21st century with your photo identification! Every bit of a photograph – the thickness, the edges, the shape, and yes, even the image, can help you identify it. It’s not only what you look at in a photo, it’s how you look at it that counts. Even the most mundane items – the weather, the direction of street traffic – can be the clue that can solve a photo-mystery.

The Southern California Genealogical Society will present “Who Lived Next Door?” tonight at 9 p.m. Untangle individuals of the same name and solve genealogical mysteries using the “FAN Club” principle. This webinar will discuss methods for identifying FAN Club members and demonstrate the technique using case studies.

The Florida State Genealogical Society will present “Dissecting Obituaries for New Clues” tomorrow, Thursday, Jan. 19, at 8 p.m. Obituaries are miniature biographies published when a person dies. They are just one of at least three possible death notices that you may encounter, and each can provide clues to your research for the deceased and the family. This webinar presents a methodology for dissecting an obituary, determining what information is provided or suggested, identifying record types that may be available, and determining where those records might be located and how to access them.
