Local genealogy groups to meet this Saturday

Two local genealogy groups will have meetings this Saturday, October 22.

The Brentwood Genealogists will meet from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Brentwood Public Library. The topic this month will be “Fire Insurance Maps – the Google Maps of Their Day.”

Fire insurance maps were developed in the late 19th century to assist insurance companies in managing their risk of coverage in areas where they did not have a physical presence. Over 54,000 maps were made of communities large and small and many communities had multiple maps created between 1895 and 1920. These maps today offer an incredible window into the past, illustrate the evolution of these
communities, and describe the physical environment of the lives of our ancestors

The Patchogue-Medford Genealogy Research Group will also meet from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Patchogue-Medford Public Library. This month’s speaker will be Rich Rossin and he will be discussing “Sons of the American Revolution.” Rich is the registrar of the Long Island chapter of the S.A.R.
