Two free webinars set for this week

There are two free genealogy webinars scheduled for this week.

On Wednesday, Aug. 3 at 8 p.m. the Minnesota Genealogical Society will present “The Third Coast: How the Great Lakes Shaped America.” This webinar will examine the history of the Great Lakes region, particularly its role in U.S. expansion through transportation, economic growth and defense. Topics covered will be routes into and out of the Great Lakes such as the Erie Canal and railroad lines, and the major ethnic groups that traveled through the region. Also covered will be a survey of records useful for tracing Great Lakes ancestors including census, naturalization, homestead, passenger lists, and border crossings records.

On Saturday, Aug. 6 at 1 p.m. the Southern California Genealogical Society will present “Five Reasons Records Aren’t in the Courthouse.” U.S. courthouse records have been damaged, destroyed, moved, or stored over the centuries. Prepare yourself in advance for on-site and online research by consulting authoritative sources. Learn why records may not be available in the courthouse, what may have happened to them, and where they (or replacements or substitutes) may exist today.
