NY National Guard enlistment cards to be digitized

The New York State Military Museum, located in Saratoga Springs, is in the process of scanning over 10,000 enlistment cards for the Harlem Hellfighters unit, a black infantry regiment.

The enlistment cards cover the time period of 1920-1949 and are for the 15th / 369th Regiment. The cards have such information as the soldier’s age, address, birthplace, promotions, reason for discharge and civilian job.

The unit was originally formed in 1916 as the 15th Colored Regiment of the New York National Guard. It was one of the few black regiments that saw combat during World War I.

Currently the collection covers surnames beginning with A – F. To see the cards that are already available online, go to the New York State Military Museum website at:
